Include Us – Employ Us!

Between the dates of 07-16.04.2014, the Youth Association from Transylvania organized the Youth in Action Youth Exchange called Include Us – Employ Us!. This exchange hosted 40 young participants from Armenia, Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Spain and Ukraine in the small city of Cristuru Secuiesc, Romania. 17 of these participants were hearing, 3 were hard of hearing and 20 were deaf.

The project centered on an artistic approach in discussing, learning and expressing about the situation of employability for deaf and other vulnerable youth in each country. It had non formal activities that gave new skills and competencies to the participants (competences which facilitate their employment and competences needed to organize similar projects in the future) and a set of thematic workshop for awareness raising on topic of the project.

The core activities of the project included a series of workshops where all the participants

1.wrote a poem on the topic of the difficulties of deaf youth and their employability,

2 adapted the poem to song and sign language, and

3 filmed the sign language performance into a music video.

Following these workshops, the finished music video was then shown to the community in the city center of Sighisoara, to the deaf community in the same city, at their club and to the community of Cristuru Secuiesc in the city center.

Beside this, the exchange also included a wide range of non-formal working methods through which the participants got to know one another and the problems related to employability: energizers, games, simulations, theatre forum, world café,

role-play activity, brainstorming, etc. Beside these, they took part in free time activities, visits to neighboring cities and villages to discover the culture of Transylvania, an Intercultural night, and cultural nights for each country present. Special attention was given to learning International Sign Language, every morning we had half an hour language lessons.

Evaluation reflection and feedback was also important to ensure the proper progress of the youth exchange and of the learning achievements. A direct result of these reflection activities was that at the end of the exchange the participants received detailed Youthpass certificates with details on what they learned and how they developed their skills, competencies and attitudes.
